Church

Visiting

We meet between April and September on the 2nd Thursday morning in the month and usually visit 2 churches.  We use our own cars for transport, but often arrange to car share between people who live close together.  We aim to arrive at the first venue about 10am so we can take the register and collect the money.  We have previously donated £1 per person per church but may wish to consider an increase in future.  Some churches kindly provide coffee and biscuits, if they have the facility, for which we give a further donation.

In August we usually hire a coach and make a full day visit to 3 or 4 churches a bit further afield.  This includes a lunch stop.

This group was set up in 2015 by the late Mary Hill who purchased 2 volumes of The Parish Churches of Leicestershire by Andrew Swift and by my calculations we have visited 61 churches so far.  These range from tiny chapels in a field to cathedrals (well Leicester Cathedral anyway) with all sorts in between. Although the churches are mostly C of E, we enjoy visiting those of other denominations, particularly in the towns. We do not claim to be experts on church architecture but learn as we go.  There are often fascinating stories relating to the history of a church, such as the witches at Bottesford or the Saxon carvings at Breedon.  Sometimes we have a local resident who gives us a talk or guide tour; at other times we do it ourselves, with the help of Andrew’s book, a guidebook if available or research on the internet.
